About the Artist
I paint the South Africa I know — the quiet beauty of places often passed through on the way to somewhere else.
Biography
I've been painting for as long as I can remember, though it's only in recent years that I've devoted myself fully to the practice. My studio is in Villiersdorp, a small farming town nestled between the Theewaterskloof Dam and the Overberg mountains, about an hour's drive from Cape Town.
The Western Cape is my home ground, but I'm drawn to paint all of South Africa's diverse landscapes. I find particular inspiration in the Karoo and Northern Cape, where the vast spaces and stark beauty challenge me to capture something essentially South African.
Artistic Approach
I work primarily in oils and acrylics, often combining both in a single painting. I'm interested in texture and atmosphere — how a place feels as much as how it looks. My Cape Dutch cottages and farm scenes aim to honour the history and heritage of these buildings, while my landscapes try to capture the particular quality of South African light.
I paint from life when possible, supplemented by photographs and memory. Some paintings emerge quickly; others evolve over weeks or months as I work to get them right.
What Drives Me
There's a South Africa that exists away from the headlines — one of ordinary beauty, of working farms and quiet villages, of landscapes that have remained essentially unchanged for generations. This is the South Africa I want to share through my paintings.
